May Days: Making Waves, Backyard Concerts, New Classes, and a Spring Cleaning Sale

Posted by Jordan Kushins on

"The world's favorite season is the spring.  All things seem possible in May." -  Edwin Way Teale

We're Small Business of the Year!

Wait what?  Such cool news to kick things off: We're beyond honored to have been selected as 2016's Outer Sunset Small Business of the Year by Katy Tang, our wonderful district supervisor. When we started 3 Fish Studios ten years ago—out of our garage during ArtSpan's Open Studios—we never could have imagined how our biz would grow, with so many fantastic folks and the support of a great  community along the way. If you'd like to attend a small ceremony on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 24th at San Francisco City Hall, email us and we will send you details. And thanks for everything, everyone! Here's to ten more years.

Catch a Wave

Last month, we hosted our fave surf photographer, Pedro Bala, at our studio for a weekend. He showed some of his epic images of local breaks and waves up and down the California coast; one in particular served as major inspiration for Eric, who carved a set of giant new plates based on a pic of Nic Vaughan carving up a crazy wave at Mavericks. We’re selling a very limited edition of hand-pulled original prints in the shop in both blue and orange.

I Left My Book in San Francisco

If you didn’t have a chance to nab one of our Literary Maps of San Francisco—a cool Eric/Annie collabo for Independent Bookstore Day—don’t worry about it! We got you; prints are now available on our site. Lots of old and new classics listed, with some of our favorite authors working today and those who came before. Consider it your new recommended reading list!

Big Spring Cleaning Sale at the Studio

It’s that time of year. We’re way ready to make room for all kinds of fresh art, and that means giving major deals on framed, one-of-a-kind, and otherwise awesome ephemera we’ve got at the studio. Save the date: Saturday, May 28th, to pop by our Outer Sunset hub for a sidewalk sale extravaganza—plus burgers and BBQ in the afternoon. Lots of goodies, priced to move!

#365AnnieDoodles: She Just Keeps Going, and Going, and Going...

Oh heck yes, Annie is still posting a doodle-a-day to Instagram--go Annie, go!--and we're still offering limited edition prints of all the art in this epic series. Find your fave(s), starting at a cool $20, and take home a piece of the action. Originals are available, too!

New Collage Class!

Sign up for one of our new collage classes taught by our very own Annie Galvin and see if you're cut out to be a collage artist. Spoiler: you are! All you need is a creative spark and a willingness to follow where it takes you.

The class registration fee of $85 covers everything: beautiful paper, vintage ephemera, and all other tools and materials.  Good music, camaraderie, and refreshments are always complimentary.  We have openings on May 26 and June 9. Register today as these are sure to sell out fast!

Learn to Carve Linoleum and Print With Us!

We're all about weekday creativity and learning new skills, and love sharing what we do—and how we do it—with you. Check out our printmaking classes this month! Each session runs for two consecutive Tuesdays in our Outer Sunset studio:Tuesdays May 31st and June 7th; June 14th and 21st; and June 28th and July 5th. You bring an image or design you’d like to carve into your very own lino plate and turn into a limited edition of prints; we provide the tools, materials, know-how, and beer. (That work you see above? First-time students! Seriously!)

Paul Madonna: Close Enough for the Angels

We’re very excited for our good friend Paul Madonna, who has both a book release AND a major art exhibition—his first solo show in five years (!)—opening at The Dryansky Gallery on Thursday, May 19th. With incredible new drawings and text panels from Close Enough for the Angels, an illustrated novel created on location in Thailand, Japan and China, it’s going to be a must-see stunner, for sure. Be sure to check it out.

Drop-In Bluegrass Sesh

Bluegrass fans, put down the moonshine and listen up. We're hosting a bunch of musicians to hang in our backyard and… just jam, really!  Be sure to watch our Facebook page for info on the next show!

The Sunsets Presents Seth Lael

Lots of sonic goings-ons in May! For the latest session of The Sunsets—a semi-regular series where local talent plays in our backyard—we’re super pleased to present the alternative-folksy-experimental-pop stylings of our (literal, as in right next door) Outer Sunset neighbor, Seth Lael. On Sunday May 29th, at around 5pm, he’ll perform live, and we’d love for you to join us.

We're always open Wednesday through Sunday, 10am to 6pm. We hope to see you soon!
