This design honors Fort Point, the Civil War–era fortress that still stands watch beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. When the bridge was built in the 1930s, engineers altered their plans to preserve the historic stronghold, creating the great southern arch that sweeps above its walls. The result is one of San Francisco’s most striking juxtapositions—granite battlements and steel spans, history and modernity.
