Known as the Guardian of the Universe, Gamera is a giant, fire-breathing turtle kaiju who made his debut in the 1965 Japanese film Gamera, the Giant Monster. Famous for his armored shell, enormous tusks, and ability to fly using rocket-like jets, Gamera evolved from a destructive monster into a heroic protector of humanity. In this original woodcut, the mighty creature stands watch over the Marin Headlands, with the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay stretching into the distance.
