Strange Beasts

Strange Beasts

In early 2026, Eric was invited to create sixteen new woodblocks for Arc Gallery’s annual FourSquared show. The resulting series, Strange Beasts, brings together fifteen familiar kaiju from Japanese monster movies and one original creature of his own.

Eric has been fascinated by kaiju since childhood. In these sixteen woodcuts, he places them into California landscapes—from San Francisco and its built environment to the coast, mountains, and forests—turning familiar places into stages for wonder, disruption, humor, and awe.

The result, Eric hopes, holds the contradiction—joy and unease, spectacle and memory, California beauty and the ancient fear of what we have made.

About These Prints

Each of the sixteen designs in the Strange Beasts series began as an original drawing, inspired by the fantastical world of Japanese kaiju and the familiar landscapes of California.

To make these prints, Eric transferred each of these design onto an 8" × 8" woodblock, then carved it entirely by hand, carefully removing the areas that would remain white while leaving the raised surfaces to hold the black ink. It's a slow, deliberate process, requiring countless decisions about line, texture, light, and shadow. Once the carving is complete, Eric hand rolls ink onto the block, places paper on the inked surface, and rolls out a print on his etching press, revealing the image in bold black and white.

The original woodcuts are hand-printed on 10" × 10" Rives BFK fine art paper, then signed and numbered in limited editions of 25. Reproduction prints are also available in larger sizes.

Woodcut printmaking is about simplicity. There's no hiding behind color or elaborate effects. Just ink, paper, and the marks left behind by the carving tools. Every line has a purpose, and every print carries the unmistakable character of something made by hand.
